First ascent on March 13, 1961 by New Zealand expedition. At 6,812m, often called "the Matterhorn of the Himalayas" for its dramatic shape. Name means "Mother's Necklace" - the hanging glacier resembles a dablam (traditional Sherpa ornament).
Notable itineraries
Southwest Ridge (14-18 days): Standard route with fixed ropes, technical sections. Camp 1: Above icefall. Camp 2: On the famous ledge. Camp 3: Below headwall. Yellow Tower and Grey Tower are key technical sections.

Weather: During the climbing season, temperatures are warm to hot in the valley as you approach the mountain. These drop rapidly as you climb up the mountain and are well below freezing at the summit. The spring climbing season generally means there is more snow on the mountain.
