Climbing history
First ascent in 1956 by a British expedition that climbed it as part of their acclimatization for nearby peaks. Originally named "Island Peak" due to its appearance as an island in a sea of ice when viewed from Dingboche. Renamed "Imja Tse" officially but "Island Peak" remains common.
Notable itineraries
Island Peak Climb (14-18 days): Combined trek to EBC with summit attempt. Normal Route: Southeast ridge, involves fixed ropes on 45-degree ice headwall. Pre-expedition training often done on nearby Lobuche East. Summit permits arranged through Nepal Mountaineering Association.
Weather and best time to go
Weather: During the climbing season, temperatures are warm to hot in the valley as the mountain is approached. Temperatures then drop rapidly as elevation is gained and are well below freezing at the summit. The spring climbing season generally means there is more snow on the mountain.
