Climbing history
First ascent on May 18, 1956 by Swiss expedition. At 8,516m, the fourth highest peak in the world. Connected to Everest by the South Col. The Lhotse Face is one of the most challenging sections of the Everest South Col route.
Notable itineraries
Normal Route/West Face (6-8 weeks): Via Everest South Col route, then traverse to Lhotse summit. Lhotse Couloir: Final steep climb to summit. Often combined with Everest climb. Lhotse Shar (8,382m): Subsidiary peak.
Weather and best time to go
Weather: During the climbing season, temperatures are warm to hot in the valley as the mountain is approached. Temperatures then drop rapidly as Everest Base Camp is approached and are well below freezing at the summit. The spring climbing season generally means there is more snow on the mountain.
