What to look for in a Lobuche East operator

Lobuche East is one of the peaks climbed on a Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) permit. Ask every operator on your shortlist the same questions, in writing.

An NMA-registered guide and the ratio on summit day

The NMA's climbing rules say every party with a permit must be accompanied by a Sirdar or guide registered with the NMA, and set a maximum group of 12 people (Nepal Mountaineering Association). Ask for your guide's name and how many climbers each guide looks after on summit day.

Our reviews Guides & leadership: mentioned in 12 of 12 reviews (12 in 4–5★ reviews, 0 below 4★); Sherpas & porters: mentioned in 8 of 12 reviews (8 in 4–5★ reviews, 0 below 4★); Personal Sherpa & ratios: mentioned in 1 of 12 reviews (1 in 4–5★ reviews, 0 below 4★).

Where it fits in the acclimatisation plan

Ask whether you climb Lobuche East after the Everest Base Camp trek or as part of a longer expedition, and for every night's altitude. Medical guidance above 3,000 m is to raise your sleeping altitude by no more than about 500 m a day, with an extra night for every 1,000 m gained (CDC Yellow Book).

Skills and equipment

Ask whether there is a skills session before the climb, what equipment is provided, whether you use a high camp, and the turn-around time on summit day.

Our reviews Safety: mentioned in 9 of 12 reviews (9 in 4–5★ reviews, 0 below 4★); Summit: mentioned in 1 of 12 reviews (1 in 4–5★ reviews, 0 below 4★).

Lukla flights and spare days

In the autumn and spring seasons many Lukla flights leave from Ramechhap (Manthali), a drive from Kathmandu (The Rising Nepal). Ask which airport you will use and how many spare days the plan has for weather.

Rescue plan and permit

Ask how a sick climber would be brought down and whether your insurance covers helicopter rescue at that height. Ask whether the NMA permit is in the price; it covers time above base camp for one month (same source: NMA rules).
