First ascent on May 18, 1956 by Swiss expedition. At 8,516m, the fourth highest peak in the world. Connected to Everest by the South Col. The Lhotse Face is one of the most challenging sections of the Everest South Col route.
Normal Route/West Face (6-8 weeks): Via Everest South Col route, then traverse to Lhotse summit. Lhotse Couloir: Final steep climb to summit. Often combined with Everest climb. Lhotse Shar (8,382m): Subsidiary peak.
Weather: During the climbing season, temperatures are warm to hot in the valley as the mountain is approached. Temperatures then drop rapidly as Everest Base Camp is approached and are well below freezing at the summit. The spring climbing season generally means there is more snow on the mountain. Toward the end of the autumn climbing season, temperatures are the coldest., Best Time to Visit: April to May, September to October, Average Expedition Length 50 to 60 days
Nepalese Rupee (NPR) is the official currency. Peak permit approximately $1,500. Typically climbed from Nepal side. Budget $35,000-60,000 for expedition. Same logistics as Everest.
