The short answer

Kilimanjaro National Park's last widely cited official figures (2006) put the overall summit rate at 45%, rising from 27% on 5-day itineraries to 85% on 8-day ones. No newer official dataset is published, so the higher rates operators advertise today are self-reported. The most controllable factor is itinerary length.

Why do operators claim much higher rates?

Operator figures are usually calculated on their own clients, often on longer itineraries, and definitions vary: some count Stella Point or Gilman's Point as a summit, others only Uhuru Peak. Ask which point counts and over what period.
