Who topped the ExpedReview Trust Index in the first half of 2026?

AAI (American Alpine Institute), based in Bellingham, Washington, finished the first half of 2026 with the highest ERTI on the platform at 4.73 out of 5 across 18 reviews. Behind it, Climbing the Seven Summits sits at 4.71 out of 5 from 71 reviews — the deepest review set of any operator we rank — and Dream Himalaya Adventures of Kathmandu leads Nepal at 4.64 out of 5 across 27 reviews, 13 of which landed in the first six months of this year alone.

Three things are worth noticing straight away. The top of the table is not a Nepal-versus-Tanzania story; it is a mix of American, Austrian, Nepali, Tanzanian and New Zealand operators judged on identical terms. The scores cluster tightly — thirteen operators sit between 3.9 and 4.8 — because a 5.0 average is not the same thing as a trustworthy record, and ERTI is weighted towards recency and verification rather than raw star count. And the movement in the table this half came almost entirely from operators still collecting reviews now, not from historic volume.

Dream Himalaya Adventures is the highest-scoring Nepal-based operator on ExpedReview at 4.64 out of 5, from 27 reviews, 13 of them approved in the first half of 2026 — the busiest six months of any operator on the platform. It holds a verified Nepal Trekking Guide licence issued by the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation, valid to February 2027, with the certificate on file rather than merely claimed.

What the reviews describe is unglamorous judgement rather than heroics. One trekker wrote about the night before crossing Cho La on the way to Everest Base Camp:

The night before we crossed Cho La Pass, we received an update from Dawa advising us to depart earlier the next morning in order to avoid bad weather as indicated by the latest forecast. He also arranged for another porter to meet us from the other side of the pass.

Alpine Ramble sits at 4.13 out of 5 from 19 reviews, and its record is a useful illustration of why weather years matter. One 2026 reviewer trekked to Everest Base Camp during Tropical Cyclone Montha:

Tropical Cyclone Montha made the EBC Trek more challenging than it already was. But, Dil and his team took great care of me. For that, I am forever grateful. Alpine Ramble exceeded my expectations on the ABC Trek in 2023 and on the EBC Trek in 2025.

Who are the top-rated Kilimanjaro and Tanzania operators?

Bundi Travel is the highest-scoring Tanzania-based operator at 4.57 out of 5, and it did it the hard way: all 12 of its reviews were approved in the first half of 2026, with no historic backlog inflating the number. Its review set is a fair snapshot of how the Kilimanjaro market actually works — the mountain plus everything around it. One reviewer covered Materuni village, the waterfall hike and a coffee tour before the climb; another arrived at Kilimanjaro International Airport at midnight and was met, driven to Ameg Lodge in Moshi and briefed the same night; a third spent the day canoeing the Momella Lakes in Arusha National Park before a game drive.

Altezza Travel holds 4.35 out of 5 from 11 reviews, six of them approved in H1 2026, and one verified certification on file. The reviews consistently single out the office side rather than the mountain side:

The pattern across the Tanzanian set is consistent: the longer Lemosho and Machame itineraries dominate, porter and crew treatment is mentioned unprompted in the majority of reviews, and the strongest operators are selling a Kilimanjaro-plus-Serengeti package rather than a summit alone.

How do international operators compare to local ones?

Three international operators in the table are on free listings, so their entries are necessarily thin — we only publish what a profile actually holds. Exped Tribe (Switzerland) is at 4.19 out of 5 from six reviews covering Muztagh Ata on skis and Khan Tengri by the north face. The Mountain Company (United Kingdom) is at 4.18 out of 5 from 39 reviews. 360 Expeditions (United Kingdom) is at 4.00 out of 5 from 27 reviews, spanning Aconcagua and a Khumbu three-peak itinerary. Active Treks Morocco is at 3.98 out of 5, with all four of its reviews approved this half.

What do the top-scoring operators have in common?

Recency, mostly. Of the top eight, six had reviews approved during H1 2026. The operators that slipped down the table were not the ones with bad feedback — they were the ones whose feedback stopped arriving. ERTI weights a review from this season far more heavily than one from three years ago, so a long silence costs more than an occasional four-star.

The second commonality is verification depth. The operators at the top hold certificates on file that our team has checked — a Ministry of Tourism licence, an IFMGA card, a national agent licence — rather than a claim typed into a form. Unverified reviews carry half weight for the same reason.

The third is boring consistency. Read the top ten review sets end to end and the recurring themes are pacing and acclimatisation, communication before departure, and how crews are treated. Almost none of it is about summits.

What should you check before booking a guide?

Look at when the most recent review was left, not just the average. Check whether certifications on the profile carry a verified badge. Read the three- and four-star reviews first — they tell you what actually goes wrong and how the company responds. And check whether the operator replies to reviews at all; the ones that do tend to be the ones that fix things on the mountain too.
