Climbing history

K2 (8,611m) was first summited on July 31, 1954 by Italians Achille Compagnoni and Lino Lacedelli. Known as the "Savage Mountain" for its extreme difficulty - approximately 1 in 4 climbers who summit do not return. The Baltoro Glacier approach has been used by expeditions since the early 1900s.

Notable itineraries

Baltoro Glacier Trek to K2 BC (14-16 days): Classic approach via Askole, through the world's longest glacier system. Gondogoro La Crossing (18-21 days): Technical pass crossing connecting K2 BC to Hushe Valley. Concordia (K2 BC): The "Throne Room of the Mountain Gods" where Baltoro and Godwin-Austen glaciers meet, surrounded by four 8,000m peaks.

Currency

Pakistani Rupee (PKR) is the official currency. USD is widely accepted and preferred in Skardu and for expedition services. Limited ATMs in Skardu - withdraw sufficient cash before trek. Credit cards rarely accepted outside major hotels. Budget $50-100/day for guided treks.

Languages

Official: Urdu, English. Regional: Balti (Tibetan dialect), Burushaski, Shina. English is spoken by guides and in tourist areas. Balti people are predominantly Muslim. Useful phrases: "Julley" (hello in Balti), "Shukriya" (thank you in Urdu).
