Climbing history

First ascent on June 9, 1957 by Austrian expedition including Hermann Buhl. At 8,051m, the 12th highest peak. Named for its long, flat summit ridge. One of the more accessible 8,000m peaks, often climbed with K2 expeditions.

Notable itineraries

Normal Route/West Spur (6-8 weeks): Standard route with camps at 5,900m, 6,400m, 7,100m, and 7,800m. Central Summit: Original 1957 summit point. Main Summit: Higher true summit, first reached in 1977. Often combined with K2 Base Camp trek.

Weather: During the climbing season, average daily temperatures at the base of Broad Peak hover around 17 ºC (63 ºF). These drop to well below freezing as elevation is gained.
