Climbing history

First documented ascent by Hazard Stevens and P.B. Van Trump on August 17, 1870. At 4,392m, the most heavily glaciated peak in the contiguous United States. Serves as a training ground for Denali and Himalayan expeditions. Over 10,000 climbing attempts annually with 50% success rate.

Disappointment Cleaver (2-3 days): Most popular route, 90% of summit attempts. Emmons Glacier (2-3 days): Longest glacier route in lower 48 states. Liberty Ridge (2-3 days): Technical ridge climb, one of 50 classic North American climbs. Kautz Glacier: Alternative glacier route from Paradise side.

Weather and best time to go

Weather: During the climbing season, average daily temperatures range from 8 ºC to 12 ºC (46 ºF to 54 ºF) at the base of Mount Rainier. These steadily decrease until they dip below freezing at the summit. The summer is the driest time of year on Mount Rainier, but rain does fall occasionally., Best Time to Visit: June to September, Average Expedition Length 4 to 6 days

Official: English. Universally spoken throughout. Ranger stations provide safety briefings. The mountain is named after Rear Admiral Peter Rainier, though indigenous peoples called it "Tahoma" or "Tacoma" meaning "mother of waters".
