Climbing history

First ascent by Jacques Balmat and Michel-Gabriel Paccard on August 8, 1786, marking the birth of modern mountaineering. At 4,808m, it is the highest peak in Western Europe. The climb inspired the formation of the first alpine clubs. Approximately 20,000 summits annually but also 100+ fatalities.

Notable itineraries

Goûter Route (2 days): Most popular route via Goûter Hut, technical due to Grand Couloir rockfall. Trois Monts Route (2 days): Traverse over Mont Blanc du Tacul and Mont Maudit, more technical. Italian Normal Route (2 days): Via Gonella Hut from Courmayeur side. Cosmiques Route: Via Aiguille du Midi cable car.

Weather and best time to go

Weather: During the climbing season, average daily temperatures at the base of the massif hover around 15 ºC (60 ºF). These drop down to between -10 ºC and -5 ºC (15 ºF and  23 ºF). Summer is also the wettest time of year on the mountains., Best Time to Visit: June to September, Average Expedition Length 2 to 5 days

Currency

Euro (EUR) is the currency in France and Italy. Credit cards widely accepted in Chamonix and Courmayeur. Mountain hut reservations ($50-100/night with dinner/breakfast) often require advance payment. Cable car and lift passes available for various routes.

Official: French (France), Italian (Italy). English is widely spoken in Chamonix and by mountain guides. German also common among European climbers. Useful phrases: "Bonjour" (hello), "Merci" (thank you), "Refuge" (mountain hut).
