Climbing history

First ascent in 1860 by British team. At 4,061m, the highest peak entirely within Italy and the only Italian 4,000er. Gran Paradiso National Park (established 1922) is Italy's oldest national park, created to protect ibex.

Notable itineraries

Normal Route from Vittorio Emanuele II Hut (1-2 days): Standard glacier climb. Chabod Route: Alternative via Chabod Hut. Northwest Face: More technical routes. Madonna statue marks the summit. Excellent ibex viewing.

Weather and best time to go

Weather: The summer months bring the ideal weather for climbing Gran Paradiso. Temperatures at the base of the mountain hover around 10 ºC to 15 ºC (50 ºF to 60 ºF). These drop to below freezing as you approach the summit. While the weather can be unpredictable higher up on the mountain year-round, the summer tends to be the driest time of year., Best Time to Visit: June to September, Average Expedition Length 2 days
