Chamonix-Mont-Blanc is the French valley town at the foot of Mont Blanc and one of the birthplaces of alpinism. Jacques Balmat and Michel-Gabriel Paccard set out from here for the first ascent of Mont Blanc in 1786, the Compagnie des Guides de Chamonix (founded 1821) is the oldest mountain guide company in the world, and the town hosted the first Winter Olympics in 1924. Today it is the main base for mountaineering, ski touring and trekking in the Mont Blanc massif.

Mont Blanc (4,808 m) via the Goûter Hut or the Trois Monts traverse; alpine mountaineering courses on the Mer de Glace glacier and from the Aiguille du Midi; the Vallée Blanche ski descent; the classic Chamonix to Zermatt ski tour; the Tour du Mont Blanc hut-to-hut trek through France, Italy and Switzerland; day hikes in the Aiguilles Rouges such as Lac Blanc.
