Upper Mustang was a forbidden kingdom until 1992, preserving medieval Tibetan Buddhist culture. The walled city of Lo Manthang dates to the 14th century. The region was part of the Tibetan cultural sphere and retains unique traditions and architecture.
Upper Mustang Trek (10-14 days): Classic journey to Lo Manthang via Kagbeni. Lo Manthang exploration: Ancient walled city with monasteries and palace. Caves of Mustang: Thousands of ancient cave dwellings carved into cliffs. Damodar Kunda: Sacred high-altitude lakes pilgrimage. Extended treks connect to Annapurna Circuit.
Nepalese Rupee (NPR) is the official currency. Expensive restricted area permit required ($500 for 10 days). No ATMs - carry all cash needed. Higher costs than standard treks due to permit fees and remote location. Organized camping or basic teahouses available.
Official: Nepali. Regional: Loba language (Tibetan dialect) spoken by indigenous Lo people. Tibetan used for religious purposes. English limited - good guide essential. Ancient Tibetan manuscripts and art found throughout the region.
