Climbing history
Annapurna I (8,091m) was the first 8,000m peak to be climbed, summited by Maurice Herzog and Louis Lachenal on June 3, 1950. The Annapurna Sanctuary trek developed in the 1970s, offering close access to multiple 7,000-8,000m peaks. The region is sacred to local Gurung communities.
Notable itineraries
Annapurna Base Camp Trek (7-12 days): Classic trek through diverse terrain from subtropical to alpine. Poon Hill Trek (4-5 days): Short trek with spectacular sunrise views of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. Annapurna Circuit (12-21 days): Epic circumnavigation crossing Thorong La pass (5,416m). Mardi Himal Trek (5-7 days): Less crowded alternative with stunning ridge walking.
Weather and best time to go
Weather: September to November is the most popular moment to go on the trek and the most crowded. The weather is mostly clear at this time of year, with average temperatures of 15 ºC (60 ºF). The winter months of December to February are much colder, but fewer people are undertaking the trek. There are some snowstorms and average temperatures during the day reach about 10 ºC (50 ºF). Spring is considered the most beautiful time to go as all the flowers are blooming. However, the air tends to be a bit hazier and the weather is cloudier. Currency
Nepalese Rupee (NPR) is the official currency. ATMs available in Pokhara and Nayapul. Carry sufficient cash as no ATMs on trail. Teahouse costs: $10-25/day for food, $2-8/night for lodging. USD accepted in Pokhara. TIMS permit and ACAP permit required (available in Kathmandu/Pokhara).

Official: Nepali. Regional: Gurung, Magar, Thakali languages spoken in different villages. English widely spoken by guides and lodge staff. The Gurung and Magar people are known for their Gurkha warrior heritage.
