Climbing history

First ascent on June 3, 1950 by Maurice Herzog and Louis Lachenal - the first 8,000m peak ever climbed. At 8,091m, the 10th highest peak. One of the most dangerous 8,000ers with fatality rate around 30%. Name means "Full of Food" (goddess of harvest).

Notable itineraries

North Face (6-8 weeks): Original 1950 route, extremely avalanche-prone. South Face: Massive wall climbed by Bonington team in 1970. East Ridge: Alternative technical route. Fewer than 200 successful ascents.

Weather: During the climbing season, average daily temperatures hover around 15 ºC (60 ºF) at the base of the mountain and steadily decrease to below freezing as elevation is gained. The climbing season also coincides with the dry season on the mountain, so little precipitation falls., Best Time to Visit: April to May, September to October, Average Expedition Length 55 days

Nepalese Rupee (NPR) is the official currency. Peak permit approximately $1,500. Budget $30,000-50,000 for expedition. Extreme objective danger makes it rarely attempted.
