History of the Annapurna Circuit Trek

The Annapurna area in Nepal was opened to foreign trekkers in 1977 after the resolution of a dispute between Khampa guerrillas, the local populace and the Nepalese army.

The original 23-day trek started from Dhumre and ended in Pokhara, but road construction in the 1980s has made most of the trek accessible by motor vehicle, with only two sections remaining exclusively for walking.

The existence of the road has changed the appearance and atmosphere of the villages but has facilitated transport and increased the popularity of mountain biking in the area.

In 2014, Seth Wolpin achieved the fastest known time for the trek in 72 hours and 4 minutes, but this record was surpassed in 2017 by Greek athlete Lefteris Paraskevas who completed the classic route of the Circuit in 68 hours and 22 minutes.

Experience Required for the Annapurna Circuit Trek

The Annapurna Circuit trek is a moderate trek that requires walking for 5 to 7 hours a day with a light day pack.

Good health, average physical fitness, a positive attitude, self-confidence, and determination are essential for successfully completing the trek. Past hiking experience is an asset, but no technical skill is required.

Participants with pre-existing medical conditions should consult their doctor before taking the trip. Regular exercise and jogging prior to the trip can improve strength and stability.

Main Route of the Annapurna Circuit Trek

The Annapurna Circuit Trek usually begins with a short trek from Besisahar to Khudi and Bahundanda.

The trek from Bahundanda or Sikrung to Jagat or Chamje is characterized by great rice-terraced landscapes and views of the Manaslu Range. It is recommended to stay the night at Chamje instead of Jagat, which is a more crowded village.

From Jagat or Chamje, the trek continues north into the Manang region, passing through agricultural fields of corn and potatoes and then forests of rhododendrons. Eventually, trekkers reach the quaint village of Tal and then trek for another 6 kilometres (4 miles) to the village of Dharapani.

From Dharapani, the trek leads to Chame via Bagarchap and Danakyu, and then either along the lower trail or upper trail to Koto. From Koto, it is a further hour's trek to the busy village of Chame. On this rather steep trekking day, trekkers get some great views of Annapurna II and IV, as well as Lamjung Himal.

The trek from Chame to Pisang via Bhratang and Dhukur Pokhari is characterized by stunning mountain views. From Dhukur Pokhari, the trail splits, and trekkers may either trek to Upper Pisang or Lower Pisang for an overnight stay.

On day 8, it is recommended to take the upper trail from Pisang to Manang via Ghyaru, Ngawal, Humde, and Bhraga.

The mountain views on this portion of the circuit are exceptional, as are the quaint villages along the trail. Many trekkers take an acclimatization day in Manang, where short excursions to Gangapurna Lake and the nearby monasteries are recommended.

After Manang, the trek continues to Yak Kharka, Thorong Phedi, and Thorong La Pass, which is the highest point of the trek at 5,416 meters.

Trekkers then descend to Muktinath, Kagbeni, and Jomsom, where a flight or jeep ride back to Pokhara is usually arranged.
