Climbing history

Ausangate (6,384m) is the highest peak in the Cusco region and sacred to Andean peoples. The annual Qoyllur Rit'i pilgrimage draws thousands to its glaciers. Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca) nearby has become a major attraction since 2015.

Notable itineraries

Ausangate Circuit (5-7 days): Classic trek around the mountain crossing high passes. Rainbow Mountain day trip: Accessible from Cusco. Ausangate Summit: Technical climb for experienced mountaineers. Hot springs at Upis and Pacchanta.

Weather and best time to go

Weather: During the climbing season, average daily temperatures at the base of Ausangate hover around 12 ºC to 15 ºC (54 ºF to 60 ºF). These temperatures steadily drop to below freezing as elevation is gained. The climbing season also coincides with the dry season on the mountain, so rain and snow are infrequent., Best Time to Visit: May to September, Average Expedition Length 4 to 6 days

Currency

Peruvian Sol (PEN) is the official currency. USD accepted in Cusco. ATMs in Cusco only. Community-run tourism provides local income. Budget $30-50/day for guided trek.

Languages

Official: Spanish. Regional: Quechua is the primary language in local communities. English limited outside Cusco. Homestays offer cultural immersion with Quechua families.
