Climbing history

First ascent in 1955 by a German expedition. At 7,027m, known as "Golden Peak" for its distinctive appearance in evening light. Popular objective for climbers progressing to higher peaks. Relatively accessible from Nagar Valley.

Notable itineraries

Normal Route/Southeast Ridge (12-16 days): Standard approach via Chogolungma Glacier. Golden Pillar: Technical buttress route. Combined with Diran: Popular two-peak expedition. Approach via Arandu from Nagar Valley.

Weather and best time to go

Weather: During the climbing season, average daily temperatures at the base of Spantik hover around 17 ºC (63 ºF). These steadily drop to below freezing as elevation is gained. The beginning and end of the climbing season are the driest months, but the mountain receives 30 to 50 millimeters (1.2 to 2.0 inches) of precipitation per month in July and August. Pakistani Rupee (PKR) is the official currency. Peak permit required. More affordable than 8,000m expeditions. ATMs in Karimabad/Gilgit. Budget $8,000-15,000 for guided climb.
