Climbing history

First ascent by Hermann Buhl solo on July 3, 1953, one of mountaineering's greatest feats. At 8,126m, the 9th highest peak. Called "Killer Mountain" due to early expedition disasters. The Rupal Face is the world's highest rock wall at 4,600m.

Notable itineraries

Kinshofer Route/Diamir Face (6-8 weeks): Standard route from Diamir side. Rupal Face: Massive south face, extremely technical. Mazeno Ridge: One of the longest ridge traverses at high altitude. Fairy Meadows Base Camp trek: Popular trekking destination.

Weather and best time to go

Weather: During the climbing season, average temperatures often exceed 20 ºC (70 ºF) at the base of Nanga Parbat. However, these quickly decrease once base camp is reached and as the summit is approached. The climbing season also coincides with a fairly dry time of year on the mountain, with an average of 25 to 45 millimeters (1.0 to 1.8 inches) of rain falling each month., Best Time to Visit: June to September, Average Expedition Length 45 days

Currency

Pakistani Rupee (PKR) is the official currency. More accessible than K2 - road access to Fairy Meadows. Peak permit approximately $2,500. Trekking to Fairy Meadows very affordable.

Languages

Official: Urdu, English. Regional: Shina language spoken in Gilgit-Baltistan. Chilas and Raikot areas are Shina-speaking. English limited in remote areas.
