Climbing history
First ascent by Edward Whymper in 1880 during his Ecuador expeditions. At 5,753m, Ecuador's fourth highest peak. An active stratovolcano with extensive glaciers. Antisana Ecological Reserve protects important páramo ecosystem.
Notable itineraries
Normal Route/South Face (1-2 days): Standard glacier climb. North Face: More technical alternative. Acclimatization from Quito recommended. Condor watching in the reserve. Approach via Antisana village.
