Hilbas Tours Adventure

Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) where you will meet Hilbas representatives, be picked up and transferred to the hotel for hot showers, comfortable beds, a briefing, and gear checks. We will also arrange for you to hire any equipment you may need.

Day 1- Arrived in Tanzania

Simba Camp
Elevation: 1900m/6270ft to 2626m/8665ft
Distance: 8 km
Hiking time: 3 hours.
Vegetation Zone: Rainforest
The driver will pick you up from the Hotel at Marangu Gate, where registration takes place, while guides and porters prepare equipment. After that, the driver will transfer you again to Rongai Gate/Nalemuru which will take about 3 hours. Lunch will be on the way to the gate or at the gate before starting your climb. Your hike will start from the Nalemuru village, the small winding path crosses maize, beans, and potatoes fields before entering the pine forest and then climbs gently through a forest, here is home to a variety of wildlife, including the Black and White colobus and Blue monkeys, Baboons as well as different species of flowers. This is the head tent route. Dinner will be served in your mess tent and you will camp in the Moorland area

Day 2- Rongai Gate to Simba Camp

Kikelelwa Camp
Elevation: 2626m/8665ft to 3600m/11880ft to 3450m/11385ft
Distance: 12 km
Hiking time: 6-7 hours.
Vegetation Zone: Moorland
After breakfast, we will continue hiking slowly through the moorland to the second cave, where you will have your lunch. After lunch, we will hike very slowly and head southeast across up and down on the small path in the moorland. We will head towards Mawenzi's peak. Our campsite is in a sheltered valley.

Day 3- Simba Camp to Second Cave to Kikelelwa Camp

Mawenzi Tarn Hut
Elevation: 3600m/11880ft to 4300m/14190ft
Distance: 5 km
Hiking time: 3 hours.
Vegetation Zone: Alpine Desert
This is another short day but a steep hike up the grassy slope. At the top, you will have magnificent views from a different angle of the National Park and Mawenzi Peak. You will arrive at Mawenzi Tarn Hut in time for lunch and then have the whole afternoon to explore the surrounding area and acclimatize.

Day 4- Kikelelwa Camp to Mawenzi Tarn Hut

Kibo Hut
Elevation: 4300m/14190ft to 4720m/15576ft
Distance: 10 km
Hiking time: 5-6 hours.
Vegetation Zone: Alpine Desert
After breakfast, we will continue west through the Saddle and Lunner desert which is formed between the peak of Kibo and Mawenzi. It will take 5 or 6 hours to reach Kibo Hut. Sometimes you will have to pack lunch and stop on the way for lunch or a hot lunch at Kibo Hut. However, it depends on your speed. The route is dry but provides a spectacular view of the mountains. At Kibo Hut you will be served an early dinner then go to bed.

Day 5- Mawenzi Tarn Hut to Kibo Hut

Uhuru Peak
Elevation: 4720m/15576ft to 5895m/19453ft to 3720m/12276ft
Distance: 21 km
Hiking time: 13-15 hours
Vegetation Zone: Alpine Desert/Arctic zone/Moorland.
This is your special day when your dream comes true, your guide will wake you up around 11:00 pm for tea and biscuits, Summit will begin at midnight, we follow a switchback path up to a volcanic scree slope, passing William Point (5000m/15000 ft) to Hans Meyer Cave (5200m/17000 ft), after a short break we proceed to Gillman’s point (5681m), which is located on the crater rim.
A bit further around the crater, we reach our goal, Uhuru Peak (5895m/19453ft), the roof of Africa. You'll have a short time to take photos at the summit. Descending to Kibo Hut is fast. After lunch, other refreshments. Continue to the Horombo huts. You'll enjoy your last dinner on the mountain in the evening despite your exhaustion.

Day 6- Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak to Horombo Hut

Marangu Gate
Elevation: 3720m/12276ft to 2720m/8976ft
Distance: 19 km
Hiking time: 7-8 hours
Vegetation Zone: Moorland/Rainforest.
This is another big day, and after early breakfast, will start descending passing through Mandara Hut before reaching the Marangu gate. We will cross through the moorland to the rainforest where you can spot many birds, tall trees, flowers, and many interesting things. Our route will end at Marangu Gate which will require all hikers to sign out in order to receive certificates of completion. A driver from Hilbas Tours will drive back to Hotel. On the way back, you will pass through coffee and banana farms around Marangu villages.

Day 7- Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate

After an early breakfast, transfer to Safari or Kilimanjaro airport for your home departure flight.

Day 8- Departure from Tanzania

Kilimanjaro Climb, Rongai Route 6 Days

Mti Mkubwa Camp
Elevation: 2,100m/6930ft – starting point 2,360m/7788ft to 2,820m/9306ft
Distance: 6 km
Hiking time: 3-4 hours

The driver will pick you up from the Hotel at Londorossi Gate, which takes 4 hours, where you will complete entry formalities. You will drive again through varied farmland with open views of the plains to reach the start point. Here, you will have lunch before your walk. As you walk through tropical rainforests, you can spot the footprints of large wildlife such as elephants, buffalo, etc. Dinner will be served at Mti Mkubwa Camp.

Day 1- Londorosi Gate to Start Point to Mti Mkubwa

Shira 2 Camp
Elevation: 2,820m/9,306ft to 3,600m/11,880ft to 3840m/12672ft
Distance: 16 km
Hiking time: 7-8 hours
Vegetation Zone: Health/Moorland
After an early breakfast, we leave the rainforest behind and pass through moorland, heather, and across several streams. We reach Shira Ridge, enjoying the views of Shira plateau and Mt Meru before descending to Shira 1 camp for hot lunch. Then, we proceed through the moorland to Shira 2 Camp for dinner and overnight.

Day 2- Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp

Barranco Camp
Elevation: 3840m/38403ft to 3900m/12870ft
Distance: 10 km
Hiking time: 6-7 hours
Vegetation Zone: Moorland
This is another long day. After breakfast, we continue east up a ridge, passing the junction toward Kibo Peak before changing direction to the South East toward the Laval Tower (4600m/15180ft). Hot or packed lunches are served at the Tower. This is a very helpful area for acclimatization and will help your body prepare for summit day. After that, we proceed down to Barranco Camp which takes 2 hours. Here we rest, enjoy dinner, and overnight.

Day 3- Shira 2 Camp to Laval Tower to Barranco Camp

Karanga Camp
Elevation: 3900m/12870ft to 3930m/1269ft
Distance: 6 km
Hiking time: 4 hours

The day starts by descending into the start of the Great Barranco, a huge ravine, and then taking a steep exit up the Great Barranco Wall to the top. Here you will see Heim Glacier, Kilimanjaro and above the clouds. The trail then winds up and down to Karanga Valley for lunch dinner and overnight.

Day 4- Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

Barafu Camp
Elevation: 3930m/12969ft to 4670m/15411ft
Distance: 4 km
Hiking time: 3-4 hours
Vegetation Zone: Alpine Desert
After breakfast, we start our walk to Barafu camp. We walk across desolate scree slopes with no vegetation around, a steep walk to Barafu. After a hot lunch at the camp, the remainder of the day is spent resting as we prepare for the final ascent. This is before an early night summit walk. The camp usually offers stunning views of the Kibo and Mawenzi peaks.

Day 5- Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

Uhuru Peak
Elevation: 4670m/15411ft- 5895m/19453ft to 3100m/10230ft
Distance: 19 km
Hiking time: 15 hours
Vegetation: Alpine Desert/Arctic to Moorland
This is your special day when your dream comes true, your guide will wake you around 23:00 for tea and biscuits, Summit will begin through a steep over loose volcanic scree with some well-graded switchbacks and a slow but steady pace will lead us towards Stella Point on the crater rim (5696m/18800ft) for about 5 to 6 hours.
After a short rest, you will continue hiking for about 1 hour to Uhuru Peak (5895m). Here you will have a short time to take photographs around the summit. The Barafu campsite descent is fast. After lunch, we proceed to descend through the moorland to reach the final Mweka Campsite for dinner and overnight for the last day on the mountain.

Day 6- Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp

Mweka Camp
Elevation: 3100m/10230ft to 1700m/5610ft

Hiking time: 3 hours

This is another big day when your staff sing and dance for you. After all, the descent will be on a well-maintained trail through the lovely rainforest with many birds, tall trees, flowers, and many interesting things. Our route will end at Mweka Gate which will require all hikers to sign out and receive certificates of completion. A driver from Hilbas Tours will drive back to Hotel. On the way back, you will pass through coffee and banana farms around Mweka village.

Day 7 - Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

Day 4- Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak to Horombo Hut

Day 1-Arrived in Tanzania

Mandara Hut

Elevation: 1830m/6039ft to 2720m/8976ft

The driver will pick you up from the Hotel at Marangu Gate, where registration takes place, while guides and porters prepare equipment. We start to climb up through a beautiful tropical rainforest to Mandara Hut. Here you will be surrounded by Eucalyptus trees, different species of birds, impatiens Kilimanjarii, Colobus Monkey, Blue Monkey, and many interesting things. Through the entire Marangu route, you will spend your nights in special huts. After a coffee or tea at Mandara Hut, you will have a chance to visit the Maundi Crater. This offers spectacular views of northern Tanzania and Kenya.

Day 1- Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

Horombo Hut
Elevation: 2720m/8976ft to 3720m/12276ft
Distance: 11 km
Hiking time: 5-6 hours
Vegetation Zone: Moorland
This is a long day. After morning breakfast, you will begin with an hour hike through rainforest glades. You will then ascend through the heathland and on into the open moorlands where the vegetation is sparse with small shrubs. Stop halfway for lunch, short rest and you will be able to spot the two volcanos at once: Kibo and Mawenzi before reaching the camp, here you will have dinner and overnight.

Day 2- Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

Elevation: 3720m/12276ft to 4720m/15576ft
Distance: 9 km
Hiking time: 5-6 hours

After breakfast, we hike to Kibo Hut. We now pass the last watering point, walking onto Kilimanjaro's saddle between the peaks of Kibo and Mawenzi. When you reach camp, you will be served lunch. Pay attention to your body and keep your guide informed of any signs of altitude sickness. At Kibo Hut you will be served an early dinner then go to bed.
