Itinerary

DAY 1: MOSHI – OLPOPONGI MAASAI VILLAGE

You will be picked up at your hotel at around 8am-9am by our driver & guide in a company vehicle and transferred to the Olpopongi Maasai Village. It is approximately a 2 hour drive from Moshi town through the beautiful countryside of western Kilimanjaro with amazing views of Mt. Kilimanjaro & Mt. Meru where you can see wildlife such as zebras and elephants depending on the season.

After arriving at “Olpopongi Maasai Village” in late morning, a group of pleasant Maasai warriors and the Village Chief will receive you with a chilled welcome drink, a Maasai traditional song with dance and that’s where your adventure begins.

A guided walk around the village will follow, where a Maasai tribesman proficient in English will be your personal guide for the day, explaining their life, past and present and how the Tanzanian Maasai navigates through globalization in relation to changes in culture, traditions and environment without losing their identity & values. The village has a precious museum, where you’ll learn a lot more about their history, social organization and tools of a traditional Maasai. We will have a short break where you can learn more information about the culinary culture of the Maasai while tasting a traditional tea (chai) prepared on the wood fire. We will then end the activities inside the village.

Afternoon starts with an exciting & very educational walking safari across the nearby bush. Maasai warriors will guide you along their paths and explain their medicinal plants, extraordinary trees, tracks and the local wildlife. In addition to that, the usage of local tools, hunting techniques and fire preparation is a part of your unforgettable bush excursion.

A traditional Tanzanian lunch cooked by local Maasai elder women will win your heart and re-energize you after an exciting afternoon. Late afternoon we will visit two pillars of the Maasai community; a midwife and herbalist respectively where you’ll learn a lot on how this tribe has managed to survive in the wilderness without access to modern technology and social services. After this serene encounter we will have a well-deserved break accompanied by freshly brewed coffee & cake.

You can spend time in the traditional jewelry shops and your new Maasai friends before we board our vehicle and drive off to Moshi We will then drop you off at your hotel or accommodation in Moshi and bid you farewell.
