Climbing history
First ascent by Marquis de Segonzac with guides in 1923. At 4,167m, highest peak in North Africa and the Arab world. Located in the High Atlas Mountains, long inhabited by Berber (Amazigh) communities. Popular trekking destination since the 1970s.
Notable itineraries
Imlil Route/South Cirque (2 days): Standard route via Toubkal Refuge, non-technical scramble. North Cirque (2-3 days): Slightly more challenging approach. Ouanoukrim Traverse: Combine with neighboring 4,000m peak. Winter ascent requires ice axe and crampons.
Weather and best time to go
Weather: During the spring and autumn, average daily temperatures at the base of Toubkal hover around 20 ºC (70 ºF). These get considerably hotter in the summer. Toward the summit of the peak, temperatures drop down to around freezing. Summer is the driest time of year, while autumn and spring are slightly wetter. Currency
Moroccan Dirham (MAD) is the official currency. Euros widely accepted in tourist areas. ATMs in Marrakech and limited in Imlil. Budget: Mule porter $25-30/day, Guide $50-80/day, Refuge beds $15-30/night. Tipping expected.

Official: Arabic, Berber (Tamazight). French widely spoken as second language. Tachelhit (Berber dialect) spoken in mountain villages. English increasingly common among guides. Useful: "Salaam" (hello), "Shukran" (thank you).
