Climbing history
First ascent of highest point (Batian, 5,199m) by Halford Mackinder in 1899. Second highest mountain in Africa. Named after Kikuyu god "Kirinyaga." Technical summits Batian and Nelion require rock climbing; Point Lenana (4,985m) is a trekking peak.
Notable itineraries
Sirimon-Chogoria Traverse (5-6 days): Most scenic route to Point Lenana. Naro Moru Route (4-5 days): Fastest to Point Lenana via "Vertical Bog." Batian/Nelion (2-3 days technical): Grade IV-V rock climbing. Austrian Hut approach for technical peaks.
Currency
Kenyan Shilling (KES) is the official currency. USD widely accepted for park fees. ATMs in Nanyuki and Nairobi. Park fees approximately $60/day. Guide and porter fees separate.

Official: Swahili, English. Regional: Kikuyu, Meru around the mountain. English universally spoken by guides and in tourism. Useful Swahili: "Jambo" (hello), "Asante" (thank you).
