Climbing history

First ascent by Edward Whymper in 1880 after his Matterhorn success. At 6,263m, Ecuador's highest peak. Due to Earth's equatorial bulge, the summit is the farthest point from Earth's center. Alexander von Humboldt's 1802 attempt brought scientific attention.

Notable itineraries

Whymper Route (1-2 days): Standard route via Whymper Refuge. Veintimilla Summit: Lower western summit, often climbed. Main Summit: True high point, requires more technical climbing. Normal Route from Carrel Refuge: Alternative approach.

Weather and best time to go

Weather: During the climbing season, average daily temperatures at the base of Chimborazo hover around 20 ºC (68 ºF). These decrease substantially at higher elevations. While the best climbing months are during the dry season, rain still occasionally falls on the mountain., Best Time to Visit: June to August, December to January, Average Expedition Length 2 days
