Dolpo remained isolated until the 1980s, preserving pre-Buddhist Bon religion and medieval Tibetan culture. Featured in Peter Matthiessen's book "The Snow Leopard" (1978). Shey Phoksundo Lake is Nepal's deepest lake. Crystal Mountain is a major Buddhist pilgrimage site.
