Climbing history

First ascent by Swedish explorer Sven Hedin's team in 1956 (disputed; confirmed 1956). At 7,546m, the second highest peak in the Kunlun range. Name means "Father of Ice Mountains" in Uyghur. Known as a "walk-up" 7,000m peak for its non-technical nature.

Notable itineraries

West Ridge (10-14 days): Standard "ski mountaineering" route with minimal technical difficulty. East Ridge: Alternative approach. Often climbed on skis for descent. Subash approach via Karakul Lake. Popular training peak for higher objectives.

Weather: During the summer months, average daily temperatures at the base of Muztagh Ata hover around the mid-20s Celcius (upper 70s Fahrenheit). These steadily drop as elevation is gained. Summer is also fairly dry with less than 20 millimeters (0.79 inches) of rain falling each month., Best Time to Visit: June to September, Average Expedition Length 25 days

Chinese Yuan (CNY) is the official currency. USD exchangeable in Kashgar. Cash essential as cards rarely work in Xinjiang. Peak permit approximately $200-400. Guided expeditions $3,000-6,000.
