First ascent in 1868 by Douglas Freshfield. At 5,047m, one of the major peaks of the Caucasus and an extinct volcano. Features in Georgian mythology as the peak where Prometheus was chained. One of Georgia's most popular mountaineering objectives.
Notable itineraries
Normal Route/Gergeti Glacier (2-3 days): Standard approach from Stepantsminda via Betlemi Hut. North Route from Russia: Alternative via Karmadon. Meteostation at 3,675m serves as base. Summit via gentle snow slopes.
Currency
Georgian Lari (GEL) is the official currency. USD and EUR easily exchanged. ATMs in Stepantsminda and Tbilisi. Budget $200-400 for guided climb. Guesthouses affordable in town.
