Climbing history

First ascent in 1937 by Polish expedition. At 6,893m, the world's highest volcano and second highest peak in the Southern and Western Hemispheres. Located on Chile-Argentina border. Contains the world's highest lake in its crater.

Notable itineraries

Normal Route/Northwest Ridge (6-10 days): Standard non-technical route with high camps. Argentine Route: Alternative from east side. Summit crater contains permanent ice lake. Acclimatization climbs on nearby peaks recommended.
