Crossing Greenland on skis is a classic polar journey and one of the most rewarding long-distance expeditions available to aspiring Arctic and Antarctic travellers. The route follows the historic east-to-west line first completed by Fridtjof Nansen in 1888. Modern equipment and aircraft access have improved safety and logistics. The crossing itself remains a serious undertaking that requires stamina, teamwork and commitment.
The traverse covers roughly 539 kilometres over about 30 days, with the full expedition running for 36 days including preparation and travel. The team travels unsupported, pulling sleds loaded with food, fuel and communal gear. Daily progress varies with weather and surface conditions. Expect long days on skis, wide horizons, steady elevation gain and the distinctive atmosphere of Greenland’s vast ice sheet. The environment is remote but not isolating. Strong communication systems and established air support provide a dependable safety framework.
This journey is excellent preparation for future Antarctic or Arctic expeditions because it builds fitness, efficiency and resilience in a true polar setting. It also offers a clear sense of progression as you adapt to life on the ice. Applicants need good baseline fitness, a willingness to work as part of a cohesive team and the motivation to handle the physical and mental demands of extended polar travel.
